Ice at the Moon’s Poles Could Support Future Missions

Although the Moon appears dry, scientists have confirmed ice in permanently shadowed regions near its poles. These areas never receive sunlight, so temperatures stay extremely low and ice can remain for a long time.

Frozen water is valuable for long stays on the Moon. Astronauts could melt it for drinking water. They might also use it to produce oxygen and rocket fuel.

Data from spacecraft and robotic missions helped researchers map where the ice is most likely to be found. The results support plans for longer exploration and possible lunar bases.

Finding local water means future missions may not need to carry as much water from Earth. That could make space travel safer and less expensive over time.
