Hurricane Lala Brings Heavy Rain and Floods to Hawaii

In mid-August 2026, Hurricane Lala came close to the Hawaiian Islands. It passed south of the main island on August 15 as a Category 1 hurricane. This is the weakest type of hurricane. The storm did not hit land. But it brought more than 20 inches of rain in many places. This caused flooding and higher mudslide risks. The town of Laupāhoehoe got 43.55 inches of rain by August 17.

Strong weather knocked down trees and damaged bridges. By August 16, the storm became a tropical storm with 65 mile-per-hour winds. It then moved toward Kauaʻi. More than 220,000 people lost power from the high winds. Roads were blocked with water and debris.
